Trying to Lose Weight for the Summer?

In the last issue, I shared how I had gained some weight this winter. I was eating too many sweets and not getting enough exercise. Normally I hold pretty steady with my weight, but not this time.

I needed to take my own advice, so I did.

Here's what worked to lose that winter weight:

1 - For lunch, I decided to go "vegetarian" whenever I could. Here's my favorite lunch:

Mix diced cucumber, diced tomatoes, a scoop of plain no-fat greek yogurt, juice from half a lemon, splash of olive oil, salt and pepper to taste.

Toast one whole wheat flatbread. Spoon individuals bites of the vegetable salad on the flatbread. Yum!

2 - I changed my snacks. For example, I finally got around to eating an apple in the afternoon instead of junk food. Now I look forward to it. It's amazing how fast we adjust.

3 - I exercised a little bit more. I was walking 2 miles on the treadmill on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I increased that to 5 miles and made sure I included some jogging intervals. I usually exercise in the morning, so I was able to take a walk on many evenings, too.

Now I've cut back to 3 miles.

Find out my regular exercise schedule and many, many ideas for exercising at home.

4 - How fast did the weight come off? It took a month to lose 5 pounds.

Then getting back to my old eating habits shed another 5 pounds the next month.

Weight Gain CAN be a Good Thing

Actually, gaining weight can be looked at as a "good thing." How???

It's a warning signal from your body.

So many health problems follow when we eat too much of the wrong thing and don't exercise enough. Weight gain is our first signal that we need to back up and change to improve our health.

When you're feeling down on yourself and impatient to lose the weight, remember that your body did you a favor by alerting you. We feel uncomfortable with that extra weight and have a desire to lose it.

That's a good thing!

I also felt the anger and impatience that comes along with losing weight. Keep filling your mind with positive truths about yourself. You deserve to take care of yourself.
